NORTHFIELD, Minn. –
Lily Shure's 24th-minute goal accounted for all the scoring as the No. 16-ranked Carleton College women's soccer team defeated visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by a 1-0 tally on Friday afternoon.
"After a tough season opener at North Central, we simply got back to work this past week," said Carleton head coach Jessica Mueller. "We learned, trained hard, and were able to execute today. Claremont is an excellent, well-coached team. I'm really proud of our players. They dug in, competed hard, and played with a ton of passion."

Zoe Silver in behind the C-M-S (2-1-1) backline. With the goalkeeper charging hard off her line, the Carleton (1-1-0) rookie looked to feed the ball across to Shure. An Athena defender interrupted the pass, but Silver blocked the clearance attempt. The ball deflected to Shure inside the six-yard box, and the senior notched her third career score with a quick shot into the net.
Claremont-M-S finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots but only three of the Athenas' attempts were on frame. The visitors registered a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
All-American goalkeeper
Avery Trapp registered three saves in notching her 30th career shutout for the Knights. She lowered her career goals against average to .556, second in program history (see chart below).
