NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Five players from the Carleton College softball program were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team. Senior outfielders Esme Song and Adriana Wiggins earned accolades for the third straight year, while junior outfielder Megan Smith made the team for the second consecutive season and junior pitchers Rachel Block and Sydney Trentman debuted on the Academic All-District squad.
 
This award honors student-athletes for their work on the field and in the classroom. Schools can nominate up to five student-athletes that have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average, competed in 90 percent of the institution's games or started at least 66 percent of the contests (or pitched at least 17 times or 35.0 innings), and are at least a sophomore academically and athletically.
 
Song, a biology major, started all 41 games for the Knights, seeing the majority of the time in right field in addition to some action at second base. She hit .248 on the season and scored 23 runs, a figure aided by a team-best 14-for-14 performance on stolen base attempts.
 
Wiggins, a statistics major with a mathematics minor, hit at a team-best and career-high .382 clip. The Knights' leftfielder paced the squad with 31 runs scored and hit safely in 30 of 41 starts, including 15 multi-hit affairs. Wiggins walked 14 times compared to only 11 strikeouts and swiped 11 bases.
 
Smith, a chemistry major with minors in both biochemistry and music, started all 41 contests in centerfield and picked up All-MIAC recognition for the third consecutive year. She batted .338 and had 16 multi-hit games while collecting 10 doubles, 3 triples, and 28 runs scored in addition to tying Song for the team lead with 14 stolen bases.
 
Block, an economics major with a European studies minor, picked All-MIAC honors for the second time. She paced the Knights with an 11-7 record—the fifth-highest single-season win total in program history—and a 3.07 ERA in 26 appearances (11 starts) spanning 107.1 innings. She was seventh in the MIAC in both ERA and wins while leading the conference with four saves. Block closed the regular season with a flourish, going 9-1 with a save over her last 11 outings while sporting a 2.15 ERA (16 ER in 52.0 IP).
 
Trentman, a biology major, went 9-6 in the circle with a 3.09 ERA. She accumulated 95 K's in 104.1 innings, ranking sixth in the MIAC for strikeouts, while her ERA was good for eighth. Trentman did not permit an earned run while pitching all 14.0 innings of a Feb. 28 victory over UW-Stout.
