NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College softball team lost twice to No. 4-ranked Saint Mary's University, falling by scores of 12-2 (5 inn.) and 13-2 (5 inn.)
Jade Thach provided one of the offensive highlights for the Knights, belting a two-run homer in the opener.
Game 1 — Saint Mary's 12, Carleton 2 (5 inn.)
The Cardinals (18-2, 4-0 MIAC) scored twice in the first and added four unearned tallies during a five-run second inning.
Carleton (10-10, 0-4 MIAC) scored its runs in the bottom of the second frame as
Grace Colburn singled and Thach followed with a home run to straightaway centerfield. It was her second long ball of the season and third of the sophomore's career.
Saint Mary's pushed across two runs in both the third and fourth frames and another solo tally in the fifth.
All-American Makayla Steffes got the win for Saint Mary's, yielding the two runs on six hits over 5.0 innings.
Rachel Block took the loss, surrendering three earned runs over 2.0 innings of work in the circle.
Game 2 — Saint Mary's 13, Carleton 2 (5 inn.)
The Cardinals carried the momentum from the opener over to the second game, scoring five times in the top of the first inning before plating another run in the second.
Carleton scored its first run in the bottom of the second when Thach singled, advanced to third on a base hit by
Emily Vogel and scored on
Natasha Paez's sacrifice fly. The Knights' other run came in the fourth inning. Colburn drew a leadoff walk, and pinch runner
Angelina Wu advanced to third on Vogel's double down the left field line before coming home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Esme Song.
The visitors put the game out of reach with three runs in fourth and four more in the fifth inning. The Cardinals cost themselves a run by batting out of order in the final frame.
Vogel and
Gloria Hronek had two-hit games to lead Carleton.
