ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton College women's tennis team lost 6-1 at No. 23-ranked Gustavus Adolphus. It was just the Knights' second defeat in a MIAC contest over the last four seasons.
Gustavus (25-5, 8-0 MIAC) is now in sole possession of first place in the conference standings with 10 days remaining before the six-team MIAC Playoffs commence. Carleton (12-5, 8-1 MIAC) drops to second place.
The Gusties swept the doubles contests as the pairing of Karina Elvestrom and Kaya DeBruijn—the No. 10-ranked duo in the country—defeated Carleton's
Giana Marks and
Ryann Witter by a 6-2 tally at the top spot. The hosts added a 6-3 victory at the second slot and a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
Peggy Fu earned the Knights' team point as she won a first-set tiebreaker and a super tiebreaker en route to a 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) triumph over Noor Omar at No. 4 singles.
Gustavus benefited from victories by nationally-ranked players at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. No. 10-ranked Elvestrom prevailed over Marks 6-1, 6-3, while No. 16-ranked De Bruijn edged
Kiley Pickens 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-1) in another match requiring a super tiebreaker.
The Gusties added straight-set wins in the other three matches. Molly Austin topped Witter 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, while Ella De Young held off
Algara Dineva 6-1, 7-5 at the fifth slot, and Lanie Davis notched a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) result over
Kat Smiricinschi at No. 6 singles.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton heads to College of Saint Benedict on Sunday, April 26 for an 11:00 a.m. match. That will be the Knights' final tune-up before the MIAC Playoffs.
