Knights stymied by No. 22 Kalamazoo

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Carleton College baseball team was outscored 16-1 (7 inn.) by No. 22-ranked Kalamazoo College at the midway point of the Knights' Spring Break trip.

The Hornets (13-2) entered the game riding a five-game win streak and had scored 10 or more in four of those victories.

Nathan Barnhart started the game with a ringing double, but Carleton (2-6) was unable to cash in the leadoff runner. Kalamazoo pushed across a run in the first when the Knights could not complete a potential inning-ending double play and tacked on four more tallies in the second thanks to a pair of damaging doubles.

Another Kalamazoo run crossed in the third, and the Hornets took a commanding lead in the fourth with a six-run frame. They added four more with a pair of home runs in the sixth.

For Carleton, Sammy Fisher slashed a single up the middle in his first career at bat to start the seventh. Fisher moved his way to third on a hit-by-pitch and groundout, and hustled home on a wild pitch to get the Knights a run.

Sam Chutkow threw a hitless inning in relief. Reece Wellsandt registered a hit and hit-by-pitch, extending his team-best on-base streak to six appearances.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton plays another early game on Sunday, Mar. 22, against Knox College. First pitch at Northeast Regional Park Field No. 1 is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. EDT/9:00 a.m. CDT.
