Early goals propel Knights to win over previously undefeated Hamline

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The regionally-ranked Carleton College men's soccer team picked up its first conference victory of the season with a 3-0 triumph over Hamline University. Asher Burt's early goal—the first of his young career—was the game winner.

It took less than three minutes for the Knights (5-2-0, 1-1-0 MIAC) to get on the scoreboard. The Pipers (7-1-1, 1-1-0 MIAC) clearance of a Carleton corner kick sent the ball toward the top of the box. Burt ran on and volleyed a right-footed laser into the top of the net to open the scoring.

Three minutes later the Carleton advantage was doubled. Hays Turner intercepted a pass in the Knights' defensive half, nutmegged a defender, lofted a pass over the Hamline backline. Ben Pennell ran onto the ball, took a touch around the goal keeper, and shot into the open net for his seventh goal in as many games and the 30th of his career.

The Knights tacked on an insurance tally in the 66th minute, with a goal that was similar to the previous one. Ben Roman intercepted a pass and sent a long ball over the defense right to Luke Brown, who deftly pulled the pass down, took a touch, and shot under the keeper for his third goal of the season.

Leo Kugel notched his ninth career shutout in goal for Carleton.

The Knights finished with a 19-9 advantage in shots and an 8-0 edge in shots on goal.

This was Hamline's first loss of the season, snapping the longest undefeated streak (8 games) in program history.
