NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The No. 24-ranked Carleton College women's tennis team swept crosstown rival St. Olaf, 9-0, on Wednesday.
Carleton (11-2, 6-0 MIAC) handed St. Olaf (9-1, 6-1 MIAC) its first loss of the year, and this
was the Knights' 16th consecutive victory in the series.
Amanda Black and
Kat Smiricinschi pushed the Knights out the early lead, cruising to an 8-0 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Ingrid Smith and
Ryann Witter contributed an 8-2 victory at the second slot, matching the winning score posted by
Amelia Asfaw and
Mariam Nechiporuk, the No. 7-ranked tandem in the Central Region.
Carleton won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, while
Miriam Shteyman rallied from down a set to complete the sweep with her 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Fiona O'Flaherty at No. 3 singles.
Piper Brown improved to 10-2 this season with her 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Mads Hockmuth at No. 6 singles. Witter also moved to 10-2 on the year thanks to a 6-0, 6-1 result against Sarah Clark.
Kiley Pickens improved to 11-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Alexandra Berns at the fourth spot.
Asfaw and Nechiporuk handled their foes at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Asfaw, the No. 7 ranked singles player in the region, bested Olha Zubarieva 6-1, 6-1. Nechiporuk secured her fourth consecutive victory, dispatching Jane Spading by a 6-2, 6-0 tally.
