NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The No. 24-ranked Carleton College women's tennis team clinched a berth in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs after making quick work of Macalester College in a 9-0 victory at the Pat Lamb Tennis Courts.
The Knights (12-2 overall) improved to 7-0 in conference play, extending their win streak against MIAC opponents to 36 matches (regular season and playoff) dating back to April 16, 2022. Carleton is now 58-5 overall spanning the last four seasons, with each setback coming against a nationally-ranked opponent, including three losses to teams ranked No. 1 team in the country.
The Knights have made the MIAC Playoffs every non-COVID affected season since the conference switched to a six-team format in 2007. (Carleton did not compete during the spring 2020 and 2021 seasons.)
Carleton continued its recent success in the series, winning a 14th straight meeting with the Scots (3-10, 1-4 MIAC). The Knights have won those 14 matches by a combined 114-3 score.
Carleton's top tandem,
Amelia Asfaw and
Mariam Nechiporuk, are the No. 7-ranked duo in the Central Region and notched their team-high 10th doubles victory of the campaign, prevailing 8-4 over Savannah Haugen and Elizabeth Trevathan.
The Knights won the other two doubles matches by 8-0 scores.
Ingrid Smith and
Ryann Witter secured their fifth consecutive win at the second slot, while
Amanda Black and
Kat Smiricinschi notched their seventh triumph of year at No. 3 doubles.
Carleton dropped only seven total games in winning all six singles matches in straight sets.
Clara Mast remained undefeated during her rookie campaign, winning 6-1, 6-2 at the sixth slot. Asfaw, the No. 7-ranked singles player in the region, picked up a 6-1, 6-0 triumph atop the lineup. Nechiporuk added a 6-2, 6-0 win at the second spot.
Miriam Shteyman contributed a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles, while
Kiley Pickens and
Piper Brown both blanked their opponents at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will host No. 35 Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday, April 19. The 3:00 p.m. clash will be a matchup of the only two teams that are currently undefeated in MIAC play this season.
