WINONA, Minn. – The Carleton College softball team was shut out twice at No. 25 Saint Mary's University on Sunday, falling by scores of 4-0 and 5-0. The Cardinals (19-3, 6-0 MIAC) limited the Knights (7-13, 1-3 MIAC) to three hits in each contest.
Game 1 — Saint Mary's 4, Carleton 0
Saint Mary's used three singles to scratch out two runs in the bottom of the second inning and added single tallies in the third and fifth frames.
Cardinals starting pitcher Makayla Steffes (9-2) carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning before
Bryanna Schaffer ripped a single to left field.
Esme Song and
Livi Peters had the other base hits for the Knights.
This was Steffes' third shutout of the season, and she has now permitted only one run over her last 26.0 innings of work
Becca Madsen (1-1) took the loss, permitting two runs over the opening 1.2 innings on the rubber.
Game 2 — Saint Mary's 5, Carleton 0
Megan Smith delivered the Knights' first hit, a leadoff single in the fourth inning.
Samantha Rodriguez singled in the fifth inning, and
Adriana Wiggins smacked a double in the seventh to account for the other Carleton hits as Kenzie Getz (8-1) tossed her first shutout of the year.
Saint Mary's scored a small ball run in the first, then saw Naleya Bork homer off the top of the right-center fence in the fourth inning. The hosts capped the scoring with a trio of two-out tallies in the bottom of the fifth.
Sydney Trentman (2-5) absorbed the defeat as she was solved for all five runs over 4.2 innings in the circle.
