DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 28-ranked Carleton College women's tennis team defeated the College of St. Scholastica, 8-1, on Saturday. With the win, the Knights (13-3, 8-1 MIAC) clinched the No. 2 seed and a home match in the semifinals of next week's MIAC Playoffs.
Carleton started the day with victories in two of the three doubles matches.
Amelia Asfaw and
Mariam Nechiporuk notched an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, while
Ingrid Smith and
Ryann Witter blanked their opponents at the second slot by an 8-0 margin. The Saints (11-6, 5-4 MIAC) picked up their team point at No. 3 doubles as Mishell Benitez and Maria Sosa earend the 8-7 (7-1) victory.
Carleton swept the singles matches, including five wins in straight sets.
Asfaw, the No. 39-ranked singles player in the country, recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win atop the lineup, while
Miriam Shteyman notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the second spot.
Kiley Pickens improved to 14-1 this season with her 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the fourth slot. Witter secured her 11th victory of the season after picking up a 6-1, 6-3 result at No. 5 singles.
Clara Mast contributed a 6-1, 7-5 victory at the sixth spot in the lineup.
Nechiporuk completed the singles sweep with a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory at No. 2 singles.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton closes the regular season on Sunday, April 27, with an 11:00 a.m. match against College of Saint Benedict. The Knights will then focus on the conference tournament, where they will host No. 3 seed Bethel University in the semifinals on Friday, May 2.
