Knights swept by Macalester

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The bats for the Carleton College softball team were kept in check for much of the day as the Knights lost twice to visiting Macalester College, falling 5-3 and 4-0.

Game 1 — Macalester 5, Carleton 3
The Scots (18-8, 5-3 MIAC) plated two unearned runs in the first inning and added two more unearned tallies during a three-run fifth inning to build a 5-0 lead.

Carleton (7-19, 1-7 MIAC), which had had left four runners in scoring position over the first three innings, finally broke through for three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Megan Smith worked a one-out walk and stole both second and third base. Esme Song singled home the first run then swiped second. Bryanna Schaffer followed with a single, and Paige Arnold's RBI groundout chased home the second run. Livi Peters continued to swing a hot bat, adding an RBI single to cap the scoring.

The Knights loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning but could not deliver the clutch hit.

Rachel Block absorbed the loss after yielding five runs (only one earned) over 4.0 innings.

Smith and Song had game highs of two hits apiece.

Game 2 — Macalester 4, Carleton 0
The Scots plated an unearned run in the first inning, and Allyson Wolf added a solo home run in the second to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage. Macalester's other tallies came via a two-out triple in the second inning and an RBI groundout in the fifth.

The Knights had at least runner aboard in each frame but Tess Bojorquez fanned eight batters in an 8-hit shutout for Macalester.

Adriana Wiggins led the Knights with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.
