Knights end Southern California road trip by getting swept at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Carleton College softball team concluded its 12-game road trip around Southern California with a pair of losses at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by scores of 7-0 and 13-7.

Game 1 – Claremont-M-S 7, Carleton 0
The Knights (6-10) saw their three-game win streak snapped as the Athenas (12-5) scored once in the opening frame and three times in both the second and fourth innings. Four of those seven runs came with two outs.

While C-M-S owned a 9-7 advantage in the hit column, the Knights had multiple opportunities to get on the scoreboard but could not collect the key hit as they left two runners aboard in the first, fourth, and fifth innings.

Esme Song was the lone Knight with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4.

Genevieve Lyon absorbed the loss, permitting three runs (two earned) over 1.1 innings.

Game 2 – Claremont 13, Carleton 7
Bryanna Schaffer and Grace Colburn had three hits apiece for the Knights, but bottom of the Athenas' lineup delivered time and time again for the hosts. The No. 7-8-9 hitters in the C-M-S lineup went a combined 8-for-11 with five runs scored and three RBI.

Carleton took the early lead when Colburn hit a two-run triple down the right field line, plating Schaffer and Adriana Wiggins in the top of the first. The Athenas scored in the bottom of the frame via an RBI groundout.

The hosts plated a trio of two-out tallies in the second inning, scored three more times in the bottom of the third, and scratched out two additional two-out runs in the fourth.

The Knights closed the gap with a five-run rally in the top of the fifth. Schaffer led off with a double, and Wiggins singled before Colburn and Paige Arnold delivered RBI singles. Run-scoring grounders off the bat of Ella Collins and Megan Smith preceded an RBI single by Song that pulled Carleton to within 9-7.

C-M-S plated four two-out insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete the scoring.

Schaffer and Colburn both finished 3-for-4, with the latter collecting three RBIs.

Sydney Trentman, who entered the contest having pitched 15.0 consecutive innings without permitting an earned run, took the loss after yielding five runs (three earned) over 2.1 innings.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton heads back to Minnesota and will play at Saint Mary's University in the MIAC opener on Wednesday, April 2. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
