Knights swept by slugging Gusties

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team could not quiet the bats of No. 17-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in the MIAC opener for both squads. Due to field conditions at Mel Taube Field, the Knights' home ballyard, the games were moved to the Gusties' stadium, and Gustavus took advantage of its familiar confines to sweep the twin bill 17-7 and 13-3 (7 inn.).

Game 1 – Gustavus 17, Carleton 7
Gustavus (16-4, 2-0 MIAC) leadoff hitter Danny Gavin slugged a homer to center field to begin the game. Carleton (6-6, 0-2 MIAC), playing as the home team, responded with a bottom-first flurry, as Ryan Chang lifted a three-run bomb to left field and Sam Zacks was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving the Knights a 4-1 lead and chasing the Gustie starter.

Gustavus — ranked No. 17 in the lasted ABCA top-25 poll — got another solo homer in the second and racked up 10 runs in the third to go up 12-4. The Gusties added to their lead in the fourth with five more tallies.

Sam Gossard's solo dinger in the fourth inning — his third home run of the week — and Brandon Damelin's two-run single in the sixth were not enough to get the Knights back into the game.

Gossard finished 2-for-3 with a homer and three runs scored. Will Schenpf concluded 2-for-2 with a walk and a run.

Ananth Iyer took the loss, while rookie lefty Luke Reisig threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen, and Jake Stern added 2.0 perfect innings of relief, striking out one.

Game 2 – Gustavus 13, Carleton 3 (7 inn.)
Gustavus scored in each of the first five frames — including home runs in the first four frames — and did not look back.

The Gusties started quickly again with five runs on five hits in the opening frame, with the help of a three-run Brady Schmitz homer.

After a two-run Chris Knowles' jack the second inning made it a 7-0 ballgame, Iyer doubled in Schnepf for Carleton's first run.

The Gusties hit their third home run the third to make it 9-1, and their fourth in as many innings took it to 12-1 midway through the fourth inning.

Gossard singled in a pair in the seventh, but the deficit again proved too large.

Sam Chutkow, coming off 7.0 scoreless frames in his last start, was charged with the loss after pitching the first three innings.

Tyler Vandersall chucked 2.0 scoreless innings out of the pen, striking out the side in the seventh.
