Sydney Trentman tosses two-hitter as Knights split DH at California Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Carleton College softball team split its doubleheader at California Lutheran University on Tuesday. The Regals (12-3) took the opener 10-1 in 5 innings, while the Knights (4-8) prevailed in game two by a 6-0 tally.

Game 1 — California Lutheran 10, Carleton 1 (5 inn.)
The hosts took advantage of three walks and an error to plate four runs in the bottom of the first, despite collecting only one hit. California Lutheran pushed five more runs across the next frame and added another unearned run in the third.

Livi Peters delivered a two-out RBI double to bring home Bryanna Schaffer with Carleton's run in the fourth.

Abby Gooch took the loss for the Knights, while a pair of pitchers combined on a three-hitter for the Regals.

Game 2 — Carleton 6, California Lutheran 0
The momentum switched dugouts between games of the twin bill as the Knights scored six early runs and cruised to victory behind Sydney Trentman's two-hit shutout.

Carleton scored three times in the top of the first thanks to hits by Esme Song, Adriana Wiggins, and Peters followed by a sacrifice fly by Grace Colburn.

After Trentman worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the first, the Knights' bats went right back to work and scored three more times. A leadoff double by Natasha Paez followed by singles by Samantha Rodriguez and Megan Smith brought home the first run. One out later, Schaffer smashed a two-run double to cap the game's scoring.

Trentman (1-2) worked around a leadoff double in the second and a two-out double in the fourth in tossing her fourth career shutout. She collected six strikeouts against only one walk in her first complete game of the campaign.

Paez finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Wiggins added two hits in four at bats.

Up Next for the Knights
After a one-day break from competition, Carleton heads to Occidental College for a 1:00 p.m. PDT/3:00 p.m. CDT doubleheader on Thursday, March 25.
