ST. PAUL, Minn. – For the fourth time in the last five games, the three first-years in the Carleton College women's basketball team starting lineup cracked double figures —
Addy Huss with 18 points,
Audrey Whitney and
Liesl McCallum with 16 apiece – but the Knights dropped a 91-61 contest at St. Catherine University. The Wildcat reserves outscored their counterparts 42-2.
Carleton (3-18, 2-12 MIAC) and St. Catherine (11-10, 6-8 MIAC) entered the contest ranked 1-2 atop the MIAC in fewest fouls per game, yet the two teams shot a combined 38 free throws over 40 minutes of action.
McCallum, who finished the contest 7-for-7 from the floor, scored a pair of early buckets to give the Knights a 4-0 lead before St. Kate's tallied eight straight points as part of a 13-2 run. At the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats held a 20-12 edge.
For the second time this week, Huss beat the halftime buzzer with a 3-pointer, but St. Catherine still enjoyed a 41-25 lead heading into the locker room thanks in part to 17 first-half points off the bench from Maddie Young.
Carleton shot a blistering 66.7 percent in the second half, but the Wildcats widened the margin via seven 3-pointers, seven offensive rebounds, and 11 turnovers by Carleton.
To go with her team-high 18 points, Huss rounded out her statline with six boards, six assists, and three steals. McCallum contributed six boards and three blocks.
Greta Schimnowski led St. Catherine with a game-leading 22 points, with Young finishing with 21 points.
The Knights shot 49.0 percent (24-of-49) as a team, their best road performance of the season, and went 5-of-16 (31.3 percent) from deep and 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line. The hosts shot 30-of-64 (46.9 percent) from the field, 11-of-26 (42.3 percent) from deep, and 20-of-26 (76.9 percent) from the line.
