Liesl McCallum, and
Audrey Whitney all finished in double figures, but the Carleton College women's basketball team was unable to keep pace with No. 6-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College, absorbing an 84-49 loss at West Gym.
After a slow start by both offenses in the first quarter, there was a flurry of scoring to start the second stanza. The Gusties (23-1, 16-1 MIAC) led 29-20 midway through the period but finished the first half on a 16-0 run to open up 45-20 lead at intermission.
After shooting 30 percent in the first half, Carleton (3-21, 2-15 MIAC) heated up and out-scored the visitors during the third quarter by shooting 53.8 percent during the period.
Gustavus extended its lead during the final period by shooting 55 percent overall and 3-of-5 from long range.
Emma Kniefel poured in a game-high 21 points to lead three Gusties in double figures. Syd Hauger added 16 points, and Rachel Kawiecki tallied 10.
Huss paced Carleton with 12 points and eight rebounds to match for the team high with fellow rookie McCallum, who finished with 11 points and a career high-tying four blocks. Whitney was tallied 10 points.
Senior
Selma Vangstein chipped in seven points and seven rebounds in the final home game of her career.
The Gusties shot 45.3 percent overall and 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from 3-point range. Carleton connected at a 40.5 percent clip, including a 4-fo-12 performance (33. percent) from beyond the arc.
