MOORHEAD, Minn. – A 3-point barrage from
Audrey Whitney, a double-double by
Addy Huss, and another solid all-round performance for
Liesl McCallum kept the Carleton College women's basketball team in contention, but the Knights (3-22, 2-16 MIAC) were unable to upend playoff-bound Concordia College-Moorhead (16-9, 11-7 MIAC) and dropped the season finale, 68-58.
"As we have all season, we competed until the last buzzer," said Carleton head coach
Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "I cannot praise the players enough for their determination and dedication this season. Anyone who saw us play knows that we made major improvements from the first game to the last. It is not easy to rebuild from scratch, but every person on our roster committed to the process. I'm thankful for each and every one of them."
The three rookies — Whitney, Huss, and McCallum — have paced the Knights in scoring all season long, but the team has rarely leaned on them so much as the trio accounted for 56 of Carleton's 58 points in this one.
Whitney poured in a career-high 27 points, including a 7-of-10 showing from 3-point range. The seven triples are tied for the most in the MIAC this season and tie Whitney for the second-highest single-game total in team history (see chart below). The 27 points were the most by a Carleton player since Jill Yanai tallied 27 against University of St. Thomas on Nov. 26, 2019. Whitney finished with the most points by a Knight rookie since at least 2006 and tied for the ninth-most points by a Carleton player since the start of the 2006-07 campaign (see chart below).
Huss finished with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. McCallum totaled 13 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks.
Whitney drained a pair of early triples, and the score was knotted 7-7 approaching the middle of the opening stanza. Huss scored the final four points of the quarter, as Concordia held a slim 13-11 advantage.
The only non-rookie points of the contest came on the first possession of the second quarter as
Nayeli Williams scored inside, sparking Carleton on a mini 8-2 run that gave the visitors a 19-15 lead with 7:12 remaining before intermission. The Cobbers tried to pull away, but Whitney and McCallum kept the Knights within range, and Carleton trailed only 31-26 at the break.
After Carleton trailed by eight points midway through the third quarter, but another 8-2 spurt — this one capped by a Huss' 3-pointer — pulled the Knights within 41-39 with 3:15 to play in the period.
Concordia carried a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter, and the Cobbers used a 10-0 run midway through the stanza to create some breathing room and held on to lock down the No. 4 seed in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs and a home game in the quarterfinals.
Carleton shot 39.6 percent as a team and 36.0 percent (9-of-25) from beyond the arc. The Knights' defense limited the Cobbers to 31.9 percent shooting and a 10-of-37 (27.0 percent) showing from 3-point range. Unfortunately, the hosts were able to corral 20 of those misses and turned the extra chances into 22 points.
Senior Carlee Sieben paced Concordia with 19 points, while classmate Makayla Anderson added 18 points, and junior Molly Musland chipped in 10 points.
This marked the end of the collegiate playing careers for Carleton seniors
Selma Vangstein, Williams, and
Bella Thomas.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton heads into the offseason knowing that the Knights have a strong foundation to build upon as they continue to rebuild the program.
