STORM LAKE, Iowa –
Addy Huss drained a go-ahead 3-pointer with 21 seconds left as the Carleton College women's basketball team pulled out a 68-67 non-conference victory at Buena Vista University.
Carleton (3-2) trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, lost a seven-point advantage in the second half, and came up with three late steals in a wild finish at Siebens Fieldhouse.
"Everyone worked hard for a great road win tonight," said Carleton head coach
Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "I'm proud of our effort and our focus coming off of finals. We'll enjoy a little break and get back to work in preparation for the MIAC season."
The Knights faced a 36-23 deficit with 1:20 remaining before halftime but responded with a 32-12 run over the next 10 minutes of game time.
Maggie Winesett scored 12 of her career-high 17 points during that crucial stretch, while Huss adding 10 points,
Liesl McCallum contributing eight points, and
Audrey Whitney accounting for the other two points.
Trailing by nine with less than 20 seconds left before intermission before Winesett and Huss drained back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Knights within 39-34 at the break. The visitors scored the first six points after intermission to complete a 12-0 run and take their first lead at 40-39 with 8:26 to play in the third quarter.
The Carleton surge continued, and the Knights built a 55-48 lead after a pair of McCallum free throws with 1:22 to go in the third quarter.
Buena Vista (3-3) responded with an 11-3 run as the Knights went scoreless for nearly four minutes to start the final stanza. Huss finally snapped the drought with a layup at the 6:04 mark, the first of her 12 fourth-quarter points—all of Carleton's scoring in the period.
Things did not look good for the Knights after Adriana Howard scored a layup to give Buena Vista a 67-63 lead with 2:58 to go, but Carleton held the hosts scoreless over the remainder of the game, including three key late steals, two by Huss and one by Whitney.
After Huss put the Knights in front 68-67, McCallum blocked a Mary Walker jumper in the lane with 9.5 seconds to go. The Beavers forced a turnover and got the ball back for one last possession, but Whitney picked off a pass and ran out the clock.
McCallum finished with four blocks and accounted for 12 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Huss, who notched her third consecutive game of at least 20 points, was 12-of-20 from the floor and 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, while Winesett made 6-of-11 shots, including both of her 3-point tries.
Carleton shot 40.6 percent overall compared to 33.8 percent for Buena Vista.
