Knights top St. Scholasica 3-0 in final tune-up for MIAC Playoffs

NORTHFIELD, Minn. –  The Carleton College women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 3-0 triumph over College of St. Scholastica. With the victory, the Knights (14-2-2, 9-1-1 MIAC) earned the No. 2 seed in next week's MIAC Playoffs.

"We scored some good goals today," said Carleton head coach Jessica Mueller. "We played together and for each other.

"The seniors have done so much. They take zero days off. They were fully committed to this program. That is what makes us so good. Every day they are trying out out-work the day before."

The 10-member senior class is now 57-9-14 (.800) overall, easily the best 4-year win percentage in program history. This cohort went 34-1-9 (.875) in MIAC regular-season play and owns a 32-4-4 (.850) ledger at Bell Field.

In today's contest, Carleton owned a 2-to-1 advantage in possession time and concluded the afternoon with a whopping 36 shots compared to only two for St. Scholastica (4-12-4, 2-7-2 MIAC). The Knights tallied 14 of the game's 16 corner kicks.

Sam Gotch opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a 22-yard shot off the keepers' hands and under the crossbar. It was the senior defender's fourth goal of the season and second in as many games.

Lola Feurer doubled the lead in the 30th minute. Kathryn Kresse had possession in the box and kept a defender on her back as she laid the ball off for Feurer's rocket from the top of the box as the junior midfielder tucked her fifth goal of the year under the cross bar. This was Kresse's 20th career assist, one shy of the program record (see chart below).

Senior midfielder Chloe Simanek almost added another one to the Knights' column, but her 43rd-minute header clanged off the crossbar.

The day's scoring concluded five minutes into the second half. Lauren Caldwell sent a cross from the right side and senior Claire Burbery headed it home for her team-leading ninth goal of the season, tying her for fifth among MIAC players this season.

Neither starter Avery Trapp nor backup goalie Sophia Lehman was forced to make a save as the Knights notched their 12th shutout of the season, tied for the third-highest total in team history (see chart below).
