Knights drop road match at St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. — The Carleton volleyball team showed resilience in each set, but ultimately fell in straight sets (25–14, 25–23, 25–18) on the road against St. Scholastica in MIAC volleyball action Friday night at Reif Gymnasium.

In the opening set, Carleton traded early points and led 7–5 before a mid-set 10-3 surge from the Saints gave them the lead and pushed the score to 15–10. Despite kills from senior Sylvia Dixon and junior Jennifer Bricker, the Knights couldn't slow St. Scholastica's momentum in a 25–14 decision.

Carleton again showed fight in the second set.  After falling behind 13–7, the Knights rallied with a six-point run capped by a Dixon kill to pull even at 13–13. The Saints responded with an 8-2 run to take a 21-15 lead.  Despite a pair of timely kills from junior Rachel Bingham, St. Scholastica held off the Knights late to secure the 25–18 win.

The third set was the tightest of the night.  Carleton erased an early 3–0 deficit and take the lead 7-6 in the early going.  Leading 11-10, the Saints put up five straight points to take a 15-11 lead.  Trailing 22-18 late in the frame, the Knights scored five unanswered thanks in large part to back-to-back service aces from Dixon.  The surge gave Carleton the lead (23-22), but the Saints closed out the set with three straight points for a 25-23 final.

Bingham paced the Knights with six kills and six digs.  Dixon followed with five kills while sophomore Ellewyn Swafford racked up four blocks.  Junior setter Megan Smith totaled 16 assists, while first-year Angelina Erhardt posted a team-high 13 digs.
