NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team pushed its unbeaten streak to six games thanks to a 3-0 Homecoming/Family Weekend victory over visiting Saint Mary's University. Senior
Jonathan Vonderlage scored twice in the second half for the Knights, and goalkeeper
Leo Kugel stopped a penalty kick in recording shutout.
The Knights (8-3-3, 2-2-3 MIAC) controlled the tempo from the very beginning of the game and found the back of the net after just three minutes on
Luke Brown's fifth goal of the fall. Vonderlage sent a corner kick into the middle of the box, finding
Alexander Grosse for a header, which was blocked but deflected directly to Brown for a header over the keeper to take the lead.
The Knights out-shot Saint Mary's (4-8-3, 1-5-1 MIAC) by a 12-2 margin in the first half and finished the day with a 20-6 advantage in shot attempts.
Vonderlage scored twice in the span of 23 seconds. The first tally came in the 54th minute.
Briggs Priem came up with a loose ball and passed ahead to Vonderlage, who flicked the ball over a defender before guiding his shot beyond the oncoming goalkeeper. Less than a minute later, Priem once again was in possession. This time the Carleton midfielder played a throughball that dissected the Cardinals' defense for Vonderlage to latch on to. The senior once again was composed, whipping the ball around the keeper to notch a third tally for the Knights.
This was Vonderlages's first collegiate brace, nearly matching his scoring output from each of his four seasons at Carleton. He had two goals as a rookie, three goals as a sophomore, two goals as a junior, and two this season heading into the contest.
Carleton's defense was strong too. Centerbacks Grosse and
Josh Zebrack snuffed out most of the Saint Mary's offensive chances, and Kugel tied up all loose ends. A special highlight the Carleton senior keeper was a saved penalty 71 minutes in, diving left to keep out the Cardinals' Dylan Goedderz and preserve his fourth clean sheet of the fall.
Up Next for the Knights
