No. 7 Augsburg topples Knights with strong second half

MINNEAPOLIS – The Carleton College men's soccer team saw its six-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 3-0 loss at No. 7-ranked Augsburg University.

The Knights (8-4-3, 2-3-3 MIAC) were the early aggressors, taking five of the game's first six shots and out-shooting the Auggies (15-1-1, 6-1-1 MIAC) by an 8-5 margin during the first half. The hosts flipped the script after intermission as Augsburg took the first 12 shots of the second stanza. Overall, the Auggies owned an 18-10 in total shots but only an 8-7 edge in shots on goal.

After missing a chance to take the lead in the 41st minute when a shot clanged off the right post, Augsburg nearly scored 30 seconds into the second half. Carver Tierney's shot from near the PK spot seemed destined for the corner of the goal, but Carleton defender Josh Zebrack came sliding in to clear the ball of the line.

The Auggies had five corner kicks over the first 10-plus minutes of the second half and finally cashed one of them in as Tierney'13th goal of the season opened the scoring with a header in the 56th minute. A Carleton giveaway deep in the defensive zone led to another Tierney goal less than two minutes later. The hosts later added an insurance tally in the 71st minute on Diego Veit's unassisted goal.

Jonathan Vonderlage nearly snatched a late goal for Carleton, but his curling shot sailed just outside the left post in the 85th minute.
