NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to five games with a 1-1 draw with visiting Saint John's University.
Carleton (7-3-3, 1-2-3 MIAC) out-shot the Johnnies (7-4-3, 2-4-1 MIAC) by a 16-6 margin in a contest between squads that were receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Region IX rankings. The Knights finished the day holding an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
Carleton was able to find opportunities to score. In the fifth minute,
Hays Turner missed just wide after being through on goal from
Alexander Grosse's long ball. Ten minutes later, a jumble in the box led
Luke Brown in on goal, but his well-struck ball was parried away by the sprawling Saint John's goalkeeper Cole Hanson.
Following a scoreless opening stanza, the intensity and the play opened up shortly after intermission. Carleton keeper
Leo Kugel smothered a long-range attempt by the Johnnies in the 50th minute, the visitors first truly dangerous shot.
In the 52nd minute, the Knights'
Finn Lennon played the ball into the box for
Jonathan Vonderlage, who was taken down by a Saint John's defender.
Briggs Priem stepped to the penalty spot and smashed home his second goal of the season and the 16th of his career.
Unfortunately for Carleton, the lead lasted less than a minute as the Johnnies were awarded a penalty of their own following a foul in the box. Kugel got his hands on Ronan O'Connor's penalty kick, but the ball slipped into the goal, knotting the score at 1-1.
The Carleton defense held the Johnnies without a shot over the final 30 minutes, while the Knights had five solid attempts over the final 10-plus minutes, including Brown's 90th-minute try that slipped over the crossbar.
