ST. PETER, Minn. –
Ben Pennell's second-half goal earned the Carleton College men's soccer team a 1-1 draw at Gustavus Adolphus College, a squad that received votes in latest United Soccer Coaches Top-25 poll.
Carleton (7-3-2, 1-2-2 MIAC) finished the contest with a slight 9-8 edge in shots, while Gustavus (9-3-1, 3-2-1 MIAC) took four of the game's six corner kicks.
The Gusties' goal came off a deflection in the 41st minute. Carleton goalkeeper
Leo Kugel was perfectly positioned to stop Diego Paulin's shot from the left wing, but the ball re-directed off a defender and slid just inside the left post.
Facing a deficit for the first time in two weeks, Carleton appeared poised to level the contest in the 43rd minute as
Briggs Priem set up
Hays Turner inside the 18-yard box for a contested shot, but the ball rolled just outside the left post.
The Knights had the first good chance of the second half for either side. As Pennell dribbled up field in the 55th minute, he was grabbed by a Gustie. The referee played advantage, and Pennell located
Jonathan Vonderlage in the box for a step around defender and a well-struck attempt that sliced just wide of left post.
Carleton finally found the equalizer in the 57th minute. Pennell dribbled up the left wing and uncorked a screamer from 32 yards out, the shot deflecting off the inside of the right post. He now has 12 goals this season, most among MIAC players and tied for the sixth-highest single-season total in program annals. It was the 35th goal of Pennell's career, tying him with Tim Wills '12 for second place in team history. Pennell has accounted for 20 goals over his last 18 games for the Knights dating back to Oct. 19, 2024.
The Knights dodged a bullet when Gustavus' nifty give-and-go resulted in Ryder Tomlinson's shot hitting the outside of the side netting in the 77th minute.
Carleton came right back in its search for a go-ahead score.
Felix Shapiro worked into the box but his shot in the 81st minute was tipped just over the crossbar by Gustie goalkeeper Vikram Couto. The Knights thought there was a foul in the box following the ensuing corner kick, but the officiating crew did not agree.
Kugel finished with three saves, while Couto was credited with two stops.
