Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Avery Trapp comes up huge as Knights win third straight on the road

HOLLAND, Mich. -- Kathryn Kresse scored for the third consecutive game and Avery Trapp stopped a second-half penalty kick as the Carleton College women's soccer team concluded its three-match road trip with a 1-0 victory over Hope College.

"What an incredible opening weekend with an incredible group," said Carleton head coach Jessica Mueller. "I couldn't be more proud of every single player on this team. We aim high, we work hard, and we hold ourselves to high standards. This was a great weekend full of amazing individual performances and most importantly a lot of depth, energy, effort, and enthusiasm for each other. While we're happy with our results, we'll continue to focus on getting better every day."

This was the Knights' (3-0-0) third game in four days, but it was not apparent in the early going. Hope (0-1-1) managed the first shot of the contest before Carleton had the final six shots of the opening half.

The game's lone tally came in the 39th minute. Saheli Patel's shot was deflected outside the left post, earning the Knights' their third corner kick of the half. A failed clearance attempt rolled the ball toward the top of the 18-yard box, and Kresse stepped up for a one-time rocket into the lower left side of the net. It was her fifth goal of the young season.

After being out-shot 6-1 over the first 45 minutes, Hope stepped up the pace and intensity after intermission and owned a 10-3 advantage in attempts over the second half, but the Flying Dutch were never able to solve the Carleton defense anchored by Trapp.

The hosts' best opportunity to knot the score came after earning a penalty kick in the 64th minute, but Trapp dove to her left and snuffed out the attempt by Olivia Dieppa.

Trapp came up with another huge save in the 78th minute, covering a lot of space before stopping a shot at the far post. She registered six saves overall — tied for the second-highest total in her career — while securing her second shutout of the year and ninth of her career.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton returns to Minnesota and will hold its home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 11 when Wartburg College visits Bell Field for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
