Late goal salvages 1-1 draw against Grinnell, Knights stay unbeaten

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – A late goal from Owen Flanagan rescued a 1-1 draw for the host Carleton College men's soccer team against the Grinnell College.

The visiting Pioneers (1-1-3) got off on the front food, harrying the Knights (3-0-3) throughout the opening minutes and breaking through when striker Samuel Gojjam bounced a volley into the back of the net in the 26th minute. Carleton was unable to respond for the rest of the first half, and only offered one shot on goal all period.

If the first half was Grinnell's, the second half belonged to the Carleton, as the intermission appeared to energize the home side.

A 57th-minute sequence started by a strong Owen Flanagan shot led to two corners and two good chances for Marc Eidelhoch. Carleton kept pushing, with a nifty Flanagan flick leading Jonathan Vonderlage in alone, but 'keeper Jayson Kunkel was equal to the one-on-one.

In the 83rd minute the Knights won a free kick near midfield, and Eidelhoch served a delivery to the back post, where it bounced off a couple of players before falling to a wide-open Flanagan, who tucked a six-yard shot inside the right post for the tying goal.

The game remained tied, and with ten seconds to go Carleton started a final counter-attack. Eidelhoch sent a longball into the box and Dylan Stiffler, volleyed a shot past Kunkel and into the net. To the dismay of the Carleton faithfaul, the whistle had been blown for a foul in the buildup and the goal was waved off, ending the game in a draw.

Kunkel finished with four stops, and Daniel Linder saved two for the Knights

A dominant second half meant Carleton out-shot Grinnell 19-7 (5-3 on goal), and a clean game ended with just 13 total fouls, although one of those 13 did cancel the game-winner.
