KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Carleton College women's soccer team started the 2024 season with a 1-0 victory at Kalamazoo College.
Kathryn Kresse notched the game winner in the 49th minute.
The Knights (1-0-0) controlled play throughout the contest, finishing with a 10-0 edge in corner kicks and an 8-2 advantage in shots.
Avery Trapp registered her eighth career shutout as neither of Kalamazoo's two shot attempts proved truly dangerous. The Carleton defense held the Hornets without a shot until the 75th minute, but that attempt from the corner of the 18-yard box was off frame. The other try was a 30-yard shot as time expired.
Sam Gotch nearly gave the visitors the lead with a 25-yard rocket in the 14th minute, but Hornets' goalkeeper Jess Forbis used her fingertips to steep the ball outside the right post.
Early in the second half, Carleton broke through in transition.
Chloe Simanek slid a pass between a pair of Kalamazoo defenders, setting up Kresse for a one-on-one situation against Forbis. The junior forward directed her shot into the left side of the net, earning her 16th career goal.
