Knights best St. Scholastica, 5-1, in MIAC semifinal

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The No. 2 seed Carleton College men's tennis team punched its ticket to the MIAC Playoffs final with a 5-1 semifinal triumph over No. 3 seed College of St. Scholastica.
 
Carleton (15-5) will hit the road to face top seed Gustavus Adolphus College in the conference tournament finals on Saturday, May 4.
 
In Friday's semifinal clash, Yuv Kataria and Baiyun Jing earned an 8-1 victory at No. 2 singles. Aniketh Vipparla and Jasper Yang followed with an 8-4 win at the third slot. Cooper Kline and Jack Rivkin closed out doubles with an 8-6 win atop the lineup, giving the Knights a 3-0 in the team competition.
 
St. Scholastica (11-9), playing in the MIAC semifinals for the first time, notched its team point at No. 3 singles, where Eamon Gerrard-Stace secured a 7-5, 6-2 triumph.
 
Carleton closed out the match behind straight-set victories by Jing and Yang. The former prevailed 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while the latter registered a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.
 
The Knights held the advantage in the other three matches when play was halted. Kenton Young led 6-3, 5-3 at No. 6 singles; Kataria held a 6-3, 4-3 lead at the top of the lineup; and Vipparla was up a set at 6-2, 4-4 at No. 5 singles.
 
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton travels to No. 14 Gustavus Adolphus for the MIAC Playoff finals at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4. This will be the 14th time since 2007 that that Knights and Gusties will square off in the MIAC Playoff Championship.
