Two-out runs haunt Knights in losing twice at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Megan Smith had five hits on the day, and Natasha Paez smacked her first career home run, but the Carleton College softball team was swept at Macalester, 6-5 and 10-0 (5 inn.)

The Knights (10-10, 1-5 MIAC) were close to minimizing the damage in both games, but Macalester (20-6, 7-1 MIAC) was able to score 12 of its 16 runs on the day with two outs.

Game 1
Things looked good for the Knights as the visitors built a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning thanks to RBI singles by Smith, Adrianna Wiggins, and Grace Colburn sandwiched around a sacrifice fly by Bryanna Schaffer.

Paez's blast to straightaway centerfield extended the advantage to 5-0 an inning later.

Carleton missed chances to add onto the lead, leaving runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, and sixth frames.

There were two outs and no runners aboard in the bottom of the sixth before the Macalester offense suddenly awoke. The Scots used two walks, two errors, and four singles to scratch out five runs, four of them unearned.

Another two-out error opened the door for Macalester to plate the winning run in the seventh.

Carleton had 13 hits in the contest, tied for the squad's second-highest total of the season. Smith went 4-for-4 with the bat, Paez was 3-for-3, and both Wiggins and Colburn had two-hit games.

Starting pitcher Rachel Block ended up with a no-decision despite allowing only one earned run over 6.0 innings.

Game 2
Macalester carried the momentum over from the opener, pushing across a pair of two-out runs in both the first and second innings.

The hosts doubled their lead to 8-0 in the third inning, thanks in part to home runs by Callia Holland and Tess Bojorquez.

Carleton had multiple runners aboard in the third, fourth, and fifth frames but could not get on the scoreboard.

Schaffer had two of the Knights' six hits.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton hosts College of St. Scholastica for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Ele Hansen Field on Sunday, April 14. That will open a 10-game homestand for the Knights, running from April 14-23.
