CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Carleton College men's team rallied from a 3-0 deficit to topple Coe College bye a 5-4 margin on Saturday.
"The match started off a disappointingly as Coe College invited us to a doubles clinic and swept the three matches," said Carleton (9-3) head coach
Stephan Zweifel. "The team had the same trapped and confused look as when
Yuv Kataria tried to explain how cryptocurrency works during a van ride."
The Kohawks (7-8) prevailed 8-7 at the top spot of the doubles lineup followed by an 8-5 victory at the second slot and an 8-4 decision at No. 3 doubles.
"The guys had something to prove moving to singles, and were determined to pull off an amazing comeback," Zweifel said.
Cooper Kline secured a 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles,
Jasper Yang added a 6-0, 6-3 win at the fourth slot, and
Jack Rivkin contributed a 7-5, 6-0 triumph at No. 6 singles.
Coe inched closer to a potential team victory with a 7-6, 6-4, 7-6 result at No. 2 singles, but
Jerome Yang knotted the score with a win at No. 4 singles. He led 6-4, 7-6, 4-1 when his opponent had to withdraw due to injury.
Kataria closed out the match and the Knights' team victory with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 triumph atop the singles lineup.
"Yuv typified the resiliency of the team as he battled back after losing the first set." Zweifel said. "His matches are typically the length of the CVS receipt, and today's heroic win to clinch the match was no exception."
