DECORAH, Iowa – The Carleton College men's tennis team came up just short in a tight 5-4 clash against regional foe Luther College. Seven of the nine matches required some sort of tiebreaker.
The Norse (17-5) left doubles with a narrow 2-1 lead, prevailing 8-6 atop the lineup and 8-7 (7-2) at the second spot.
Baiyun Jing and
Jasper Yang were responsible for the Knights' (9-4) first team point after winning 8-7 (7-5) at No. 3 doubles.
Three of the six singles matches required super tiebreakers. Luther picked up wins at No. 1 singles—by a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) tally—and at the fifth slot by a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) margin.
Cooper Kline rallied from a set down to prevail 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 3 doubles. It was his sixth consecutive victory and improved his season mark for singles to 10-2.
Jing added the 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win at No. 2 singles while
Anniketh Vipparla contributed a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the sixth slot.
With the team scored knotted 4-4, the match result was decided at No. 4 singles where Juan Hernandez Herrera outlasted Yang by a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) score.
