Game Recap: Baseball |

Big innings doom Knights in losses to Redlands, Bates

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Carleton College baseball team's Spring Break slide continued as the Knights were defeated 16-6 (8 inn.) by the University of Redlands and 12-6 by Bates College.

Game One
Redlands 16, Carleton 6 (8 inn.)
The Knights (1-8) got off to a flying start, putting five runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first thanks to timely RBI hits by Steve Antrim and Aaron Rice.

The early advantage did not prove enough, however, as Redlands (10-11) tallied five runs of its own in the bottom of the second with the help of two Carleton fielding miscues. Then, the Bulldogs took the lead with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth frame. Redlands tacked on another run in the fifth and two in the sixth to make it a dozen unanswered runs in total.

Ananth Iyer plated a run with a no-out double in the seventh to make it 12-6, but that would be the final positive as Redlands knocked in four more scores to end the game after eight innings.

Iyer was 2-for-4 with the double and two RBI. Sam Zacks was an identical 2-for-4 with a run and stolen base.

Game 2 Recap
Bates 12, Carleton 6
Bates (8-4) jumped out to an early lead as the first eight batters reached base, leading to a five-run inning. The Bobcats put another tally on the board in the second with an RBI double by Henry Prince, making it 6-0.

Carleton began to chip away, as Nathan Barnhart motored home in the third after Zacks stole second and the throw down by the Bates catcher went awry. Zacks would come around on the next batter after a deep sac fly by Will Schnepf. Next inning, Ryan Chang led off with a triple cranked to right center and promptly scored on a sizzling opposite-field hit by Sam Chutkow. Then, Barnhart came around again after he hit a double that snuck over the third-base bag and scored two batters later when a throw from the Bobcats' shortstop on a ground ball sailed over the fence and out of play.

The score stood at 6-4 going into the bottom of the fifth, but that was as close as Carleton would get. Bates picked up a run in the bottom half of the frame then put the game to bed with five scores in the sixth. Carleton rallied for two in the ninth, but it was far from enough as the Knights dropped their sixth game in a row.

First-year Dan Avillo and sophomore Ethan Chan both put up 2.0 innings of one-run relief to keep Carleton in the game. Barnhart went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Up Next for the Knights
