HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Carleton College men's tennis team opened up the competition portion of its Spring Break trip with 9-0 victories over Western New England University and Nazareth University. All eight players on the roster went 3-0 on the day.
Carleton 9, Western New England 0
The Knights (7-2) won all three doubles matches by 8-3 tallies.
Yuv Kataria and
Baiyun Jing prevailed atop the lineup, while
Aniketh Vipparla and
Jasper Yang did so at No. 2 doubles.
Kenton Young and
Jerome Yang added their first win at the third slot.
Carleton won all six singles matches in straight sets, dropping no more than two games in any contest.
Cooper Kline won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while brothers Jasper and
Jerome Yang prevailed 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2, respectively, at the second and third slots. Vipparla notched a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, while
Jack Rivkin and Young posted matching 6-1, 6-0 scores in the other singles contests.
Carleton 9, Nazareth 0
Jing and
Jasper Yang got the Knights started with an 8-2 triumph at No. 3 doubles, while Kline and Rivkin added an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, and Kataria and Vipparla completed the sweep with an 8-4 result.
The Knights dominated the top five singles matches again. Kataria, Jing, Kline,
Jerome Yang, and Rivkin lost a total of four games combined in notching victories.
Young closed the day with a barn burner at No. 6 singles. After dropping the first five games in the opening set, he battled back to win 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
"Lots of credit to Kenton for turning that singles match around," said Carleton head coach
Stephan Zweifel. "I have not seen such an inspiring mess since the Jackson Pollock exhibit at the Guggenheim Museum."
