HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Carleton College men's tennis team won for the third time in two days as the Knights closed out a 6-3 victory over Frostburg State University, a NCAA Division II program.
Aniketh Vipparla and
Jasper Yang won in both singles and doubles.
While Frostburg State (5-6) scored its points at the top of the lineup, the Carleton (8-2) depth was too much for the Bobcats to handle.
Cole Alcala and German Diaz Martin captured an 8-5 victory for Frostburg State at No. 1 doubles, and they both won their matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, in straight sets. Undaunted, Carleton claimed the other six clashes on the day to secure the victory.
Viapparla teamed with
Yuv Kataria for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, while
Jasper Yang and
Baiyun Jing pulled away in the tiebreaker for an 8-7 (7-3) triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Jasper Yang and Vipparla claimed straight-set victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively, prevailing by scores of 6-3, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1.
Cooper Kline added a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.
The day's final match was a thriller at No. 5 singles. After claiming the opening set 6-4,
Jerome Yang dropped the second set forcing a super tiebreaker.
"Jerome's gusty 10-8 third set tiebreak win was indicative of our tenacious play today," said Carleton head coach
Stephan Zweifel. "I knew he had the match under control when he uttered that it is 'better to be a lion for a day than a sheep for a lifetime' during the last changeover."
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton had two more matches during its Spring Break trip. The Knights face Grinnell College at 2:00 p.m. EDT / 1:00 p.m. CDT on Thursday, March 21, followed by a Saturday meeting with University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
