Knights absorb first losses of the season, fall to Saint Mary and Middlebury

CLERMONT, Fla. – Bryanna Schaffer and Grace Colburn had three hits apiece on the day, but the Carleton College softball team suffered its first setbacks of the season, falling 2-1 to College of Saint Mary (Neb.) and 6-3 to Middlebury College.

Game 1
Saint Mary 2, Carleton 1
The Flames (7-7) rallied late, scoring twice in the top of the seventh, to had Carleton its first loss of the season. Genevieve Lyon tossed 4.1 scoreless frames in her collegiate debut, but the Knight bats that had entered the day hitting a collective .389 were unable to come up with many clutch hits as Carleton went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven baserunners.

"Genevieve gave us a great outing today," said Carleton head coach Amy Erickson. "We just couldn't give her the run support and couldn't quite capitalize on some opportunities with the bats."

The Knights scored their run in the bottom of the fourth. Adrianna Wiggins doubled and raced home on Colburn's single to center.

Saint Mary scored both of its runs in the top of the seventh, the winning tally coming on a two-out, bases-loaded walk.

Game 2
Middlebury 6, Carleton 3
Carleton built leads of 2-0 and 3-2, but the Knights were undone by a four-run fifth inning for the Panthers (6-2).

Megan Smith singled to open the contest, stole second and third, and scored on the first of Schaffer's two hits in the game. The Carleton shortstop scored soon after via Colburn's single to right field.

Middlebury evened the score with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Carleton regained the lead in the top of the fifth when Smith walked, stole second, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Schaffer's sac fly.

The wheels came off for the Knights in the bottom of the frame as three consecutive errors opened the door for a 4-run rally.

Rachel Block was charged with the loss as she was charged with all six runs—only one earned—over 5.0 frames.

"Not our best softball," said Erickson. "But this team is resilient and will bounce back even stronger as we continue to move forward and prepare for the conference season."

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton plays twice on Monday, March 18. The Knights face Wesleyan University (Conn.) at 10:00 AM EDT / 9:00 AM CDT with a 2:45 PM EDT / 1:45 PM CDT first pitch against Luther College.
