MINNEAPOLIS –
Selma Vangstein poured in a career-best 17 points and
Bella Thomas added her first career double-double as the Carleton College women's basketball team posted a 59-41 victory at North Central University.
"I am proud of our players as they executed the defensive game plan very well," said Carleton head coach
Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "That solid defense was the key to the win. Each time out on the court is an opportunity for our young team to improve. We took advantage of that opportunity today."
The Knights (1-2) played their stingiest defense since recording an 84-33 triumph over Crown College exactly five years ago.
Carleton started slow and trailed 14-9 after the first quarter, but the Knights out-scored North Central 20-7 in the second stanza to carry a 29-21 lead into the break. Vangstein and
Addy Huss both went 3-for-3 from the floor as the Knights shot 67 percent (10-of-15) for the period while limiting the Rams to a 2-for-12 (17 percent) performance.
The Rams pulled to within six points early in the third quarter, but the Knights responded a 7-0 spurt to open up some breathing room. Carleton held a double-digit lead throughout the foruth quarter.
Carleton shot 34 percent overall but held North Central to 25 percent shooting on the afternoon.
Vangstein was 7-of-11 from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds. Thomas posted career bests of 15 points and 10 boards, while
Addy Huss added 13 points.
MaKenzie Latzke tallied 16 points to lead North Central, which also saw a 13-point effort from Kaitlyn VanderPloeg.
