NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's basketball team returned to play at West Gym for the first time since February 2023 but were downed by the University of Wisconsin-Superior, 68-41.
"UW-Superior is a very good, veteran team," said Carleton head coach
Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "We struggled to finish possessions against them. Experience is important in this game. We'll just have to build our experience one game at a time. I'm proud of our fight - good things will come from that in the future."
Bright spots in the loss for the Knights (0-2) included first-years
Addy Huss and
Audrey Whitney notching double-digit scoring once again, as both rookies tallied 13 in the contest. Huss added eight rebounds, and Whitney shot 4-for-5 on the evening. Senior
Nayeli Williams, playing only her second collegiate game, posted 10 points and grabbed five boards.
The Yellowjackets (2-0) shot 43.3 percent from the field and 32.0 percent (8-for-25) from three-point range. Carleton concluded shooting 27.7 percent and went 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) from three. UW-Superior also enjoyed a 47-29 edge on the glass.
The reigning UMAC regular season champions UW-Superior got out to an early lead, using their size advantage to great effect down low. After a pair of Williams free throws cut the Yellowjacket edge to 8-5, the visitors went on an 18-1 run that spanned almost 10 minutes, and the visitors went into halftime up 20.
Carleton sprung to life in the second half. However, despite 11 points and a late three from Whitney in the third, and two quick steals and fast-break buckets to start the fourth, the Yellowjackets offense kept the Knights at arm's length to close out the game.
Haylie Jerde paced the visitors with 11 points off the bench. Katie Dobson added 10 points, and Chloe Peterson came off the bench to pull down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton heads to Minneapolis on Saturday, Nov. 16 for another non-conference meeting, this one at North Central University. Tip-off is set at 1:00 P.M.
