NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team put together a complete performance, flying to a 3-0 victory over the College of St. Scholastica with the help of two goals from first-year
Dylan Stiffler.
Carleton (6-3-3, 2-3-0 MIAC) got going early, as
Blake Jones laid a ball wide to Stiffler, who barged into the box and punched a low shot off the goalkeeper and into the net in the seventh minute. The Saints (3-8-1, 1-3-0 MIAC) had one of their best chances early, when Ayub Mohamed slung a pacy shot on goal, but
Leo Kugel was perfectly positioned and held onto the hard try to prevent a rebound.
The game tilted slightly to Carleton's end, but St. Scholastica stayed in it until the 61st minute, when Jones crossed to
Jonathan Vonderlage, who dinked away from one defender and scored a left-footed goal to give the home side some breathing room.
The Carleton defense clamped down for the final minutes, highlighted by
Marc Eidelhoch man-marking one of the MIAC's leading scorers in Gabriel Marchesoni out of the game. The Knights got one more insurance goal in the 83rd minute when Stiffler applied pressure to a Saints defender who slipped in the box, allowing the striker to nip in and score his second of the game without opposition.
Jones' two-helper day was the first multiple assist effort by a Knight this season. Kugel finished with two saves for his fourth clean sheet in six starts.
Overall, Carleton out-shot St. Scholastica 18-3, with seven shots on goal to the Saints' two. The Knights held the corner edge, 4-1.
