Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Jackson Corcoran '26

Knights offense explodes in 8-1 win over Cornell

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team ran roughshod on Saturday, scoring a season-high eight goals against the Cornell College Rams for an 8-1 triumph. Owen Flanagan had two goals and an assist to lead the way.

The Knights (7-3-3, 2-3-0 MIAC) were incredibly clinical, scoring their eight goals on just 18 shots and 10 shots on goal. Cornell (4-7-1, 2-0-1 Midwest) had two shots, both on net. The Knights held the corner kick advantage 10-0. The eight-goal outburst is tied for the 10th-most goals in a game for Carleton (see chart below).

Carleton got contributions from all over, as substitutes scored three goals and had two assists, including first career goals for Luke Wharton and Nick Chou.

The Rams started as the better team, but Carleton got a goal somewhat against the run of play as a cross was cleared right into the feet of Blake Jones, who put a screened shot into the bottom corner. That goal turned the tide, with the Knights putting their foot to the pedal from then on.

Eight minutes later, Flanagan sent an excellent corner to the back post, and Alexander Grosse leaped high above his marker to crash home a header, his second goal of the season. Nearer the end of the half, Briggs Priem sent a perfect one-touch pass into the box for Flanagan, who made a simple finish for a third goal.

Flanagan continued his dynamite game when Hays Turner sent a low cross in for the onrushing senior, who directed the first-time shot into the back of the net from 16 yards in the 54th minute.

Carleton continued to add in the 70th minute, when Dylan Fox-Arnold directed a ball into the thick of the box, and it was played off the head of a Cornell defender for an own goal. Four minutes later, Fox-Arnold fired another

Chou, and the first-year flew in and smashed a powerful header over the line.

Fox-Arnold finished off an electric substitute appearance in the 77th minute, when the Cornell goalkeeper spilled Josh Watzka's long shot and the senior midfielder nipped in and finished the loose ball.

In the 80th minute Cornell received a contentious penalty, and Madiou Diallo rolled it in for a consolation, but Carleton received their own spot-kick in the 86th minute, and Wharton scored his first career goal with a well-placed penalty.

Flanagan's two-goal, one-assist day was his third career brace, and his most points in a game. He now has seven goals on the season, tying his career high.

This was Fox-Arnold's first career game with multiple goal involvements (one goal, one assist).

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton plays a crucial MIAC game on Tuesday, Oct. 15, traveling to Macalester College for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
