MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team saw a four-game winning streak halted with a 3-2 loss at Augsburg University in a back-and-forth match.
Carleton (9-4-3, 4-4-0 MIAC) registered 17 shots, with four of those being on goal. Augsburg (9-3-5, 3-1-4 MIAC) put up 14 attempts, but nine were on frame. The Knights took eight corners to the Auggies' three. This was the first time the Knights have been involved in a game in which both teams have scored multiple goals since beating Hamline 3-2 on Oct. 11, 2022.
The home team got off to the better start, as Augsburg had a goal waved off due to offsides in the 19th minute and got the lead anyway four minutes later, as Tomas Menna got on the end of a counterattack and slipped a shot in at the far post.
In the 39th minute, the Auggies' goalkeeper bowled over
Owen Flanagan in the box, giving Carleton a penalty. Flanagan got up and took the kick, rolling calmly into the back of the net for his 10th goal of the season. Flanagan is the 14th Knight to score double-digit goals in a season and has climbed into a tie for sixth on the career goals leaderboard (see charts below).
Carleton found its way to the penalty spot once again midway through the second half, as
Marc Eidelhoch was tripped up in the box.
Ben Pennell was elected as taker this time, and the junior slugged home his second goal in as many games.
The home side reeled back the match less than three minutes later, as Remus Repcak squared for Menna, and the striker turned the cross in for his brace. Then, with four minutes remaining in the game, Muhammed Keita passed into the box for Mizael Harris, who cut back and scored the go-ahead goal for Augsburg.
Daniel Linder tied his season-high with six saves, including multiple one-on-one stops. Pennell was at the center of the action, putting up six shots and accounting for three of Carleton's four shots on goal.
Wednesday's results across the league dropped the Knights into a tie with Hamline University for sixth place in the MIAC standings with two games remaining in the regular season.
