Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Knights soar past Saint Mary's to clinch 17th consecutive postseason berth

WINONA, Minn. – Ben Pennell had a goal and two assists to lead the Carleton College men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory at Saint Mary's University. With that result, the Knights clinched a berth in the six-team MIAC Playoffs for the 17th consecutive time, extending Carleton's conference record.

Carleton (10-4-3, 5-4-0 MIAC) was aggressive from the start and owned a 27-6 edge in shot attempts on the afternoon, including a whopping 17-1 margin during the first half. The Knights took 13 of the game's 16 corner kicks.

The Knights got on the scoreboard in the 20th minute. Hays Turner collected a pass from Felix Shapiro, dribbled into the box, cut back, and slotted a pass to the top of the 6-yard box. Pennell volleyed home the delivery to score for the third consecutive contest.

In the 36th minute, Pennell had his initial shot saved by Cardinals' goalkeeper Daniel Sessler, but the Carleton forward collected the rebound and deftly sent a pass in front for Willan Shrock, who knocked home his second goal of the season.

The day's scoring was concluded in the 62nd minute. Pennell stole the ball, dribbled up the let wing before sliding the ball toward the penalty spot. Shapiro ran onto it and smashed a left-footed strike into the left side for his first collegiate goal.

Leo Kugel got the starting nod in goal for the Knights and notched his sixth shutout of the season. He made four saves and now leads qualifying MIAC stoppers with a 0.34 goals against average and a .893 save percentage.

Depending on how results play out over the final week of the regular season, Carleton could be either the No. 4, No. 5, or No. 6 seed in next week's MIAC Playoffs.
