NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team picked up three crucial standings points thanks to a blistering first half that led to a 3-0 triumph over Hamline University.
This was the fourth win in a row for the Knights (9-3-3, 4-3-0 MIAC), and it moved them inot a tie for fourth in the MIAC standings.
Carleton controlled the contest and held an explosive Hamline (12-4-0, 4-4-0 MIAC) offense goalless for the first time this year. The Knights had 16 shots (six on goal) to Hamline's six (two on goal). The Knights took four corners to the Pipers' one. Hamline had scored two or more goals in 13 of its 15 matches this year and came into the game scoring the seventh-most goals per game in D-III with 3.27.
Carleton pushed forward in the 10th minute and found
Dylan Stiffler in space in the box. The first-year forward flicked a shot on goal, but Hamline goalkeeper Maxim Henderson made a superlative save, reacting to claw the ball off the line.
The Knights had to wait 20 more minutes to get on the board, but
Briggs Priem dropped a ball over the top for
Hays Turner, who played a first-time cross to
Ben Pennell. The 2023 All-Region striker, who has been in and out of the lineup due to injury, put his first goal of the season into the top of the net.
Less than three minutes later, Pennell found himself dribbling along the byline, and the junior cut the ball back to
Owen Flanagan, who spun before lashing home his ninth goal of the year. Flanagan is now tied for ninth on the Carleton career goals leaderboard (see chart below).
The Knights finished off their dream half with
Willan Shrock dribbling down the right wing and spotting a wide-open Priem at the penalty spot. Priem took his time and coolly finished his uncontested shot.
Neither side was able to change the score throughout the second half, and Hamline's chances for a late rally were further dashed when the team's top offensive threat—Ricky Kwabena Yawson—received a straight red card for dissent after being whistled for a hard tackle in the 82nd minute.
Leo Kugel made two simple saves to earn his fifth clean sheet in eight starts. Flanagan's goal also moved him to fourth in the MIAC in scores, and fifth in points (21 pts, 9 g, 3 a). Pennell netted a goal and an assist in just his fifth appearance of the season.
In the last two games, the Carleton defense has faced the MIAC's top-two goal scorers—Hans Haenicke of Macalester College (11 goals) and Ricky Kwabena Yawson of Hamline (11 goals)—and did not permit either player to get free to attempt a single shot.
