NORTHFIELD, Minn – The Carleton College football team (2-4, 1-3 MIAC) fell to Saint John's University (6-0, 4-0 MIAC) in a 48-7 defeat at Laird Stadium.
The third-ranked Johnnies jumped out to an early 20-0 lead with 10:12 to play in the second quarter before the Knights were able to answer.
Nick Toole, in his first career start, connected with
Tyler Dimond on a deep pass over a Saint John's defender for a 75-yard touchdown.
As time was winding down in the first half the Johnnies were threatening to score again, but the Knights' defense forced a fumble with 41 seconds to go. The loose ball was recovered by
Henry Detmer on the Knights' two-yard line. The score at halftime stood at 20-7 in favor of the visitors.
The Knights were shut out in the second half and the Johnnies, who entered the game leading the nation in passing (335.8 yards/game), went on to score four times. Three passing touchdowns by Aaron Syverson were followed by a 69-yard rushing touchdown for Saint John's.
Toole finished the afternoon 17-of-26 for 149 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target was Dimond, who hauled in five receptions for 93 yards and the Knights' sole touchdown.
Defensively, the Knights were led by a 12-tackle effort from
Henry Detmer. Following suit was
Jacob Ventura with eight tackles of his own.
Johnnies' quarterback Syverson finished the game 30-of-39 for 400 yards and five touchdowns. 138 of these yards went to receiver Marselio Mendez.
