Box Score LA CROSSE, Wis. – For the second time in as many days, the Carleton College men's went on the road and posted a multi-goal, shutout road victory, this time defeating Viterbo University, 5-0.
The Knights (3-0-0) have now outscored their competition by a 14-1 margin during the first three games of the campaign, thanks to a 6-1 triumph over Northland College on Sept. 1 and a 3-0 victory at Augustana College (IL) on Sept. 3. This is also the most goals Carleton has scored during a season's initial three contests since tallying 15 over that span in 2006.
At Viterbo (1-1-2) on Monday, the Knights finished with a 19-8 edge in shots and a 9-2 margin in corner kicks, but they were kept off the scoreboard during the first half before erupting for five goals after intermission.
In the 53rd minute,
Jonathan Vonderlage stole the ball from a V-Hawk defender, took a touch, and blasted a shot from the top of the box into the left side of the net for his second goal of the campaign.
Vonderlage played a role in Carleton's next score as he was taken down while attacking the goal in the 70th minute, earning the Knights a penalty kick.
Trevor Jones converted from the PK spot for his career-high fourth goal of the season, moving him atop the MIAC leaderboard this season.
Less than nine minutes more elapsed before Carleton extended its lead.
Briggs Priem collected a deflection by a Viterbo defender and rocketed a shot into the top corner of the net for his second tally of the campaign.
The Knights' fourth goal came in the 81st minute and came thanks to the rare goalkeeper assist.
Carleton goalie
Leo Kugel made the save at one of the field, then booted the ball more than 60 yards over the entire Viterbo defense.
Ben Pennell raced for the bounding ball and headed it over the V-Hawk goalkeeper and into the open net. This was also Pennell's second goal of the year, and Kugel became the first Carleton goalkeeper with an assist since Pete Semmer against Bethel on Oct. 9, 2010.
The day's final goal came in spectacular fashion.
Matvei Keshkekian lofted a ball to the back post where
Blake Jones finished with a diving header back across the goal mouth, notching his first goal of the season.
In addition to registering an assist, Kugel also collected four saves in securing his first career clean sheet.
