DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 7 ranked Carleton College men's soccer team got back in the win column, securing a 5-0 triumph at the College of St. Scholastica.
Ben Pennell and
Blake Jones both scored twice and had an in the contest.
This was the Knights' ninth shutout of the year, tops across all three divisions of NCAA Men's Soccer.
With a 10-1-0 overall mark this year, the 2023 Knights (4-1-0 MIAC) matched the 2008 squad with the program record for most wins through the season's first 11 games (see chart below).
This afternoon, Carleton held an 18-7 edge in shots attempted and a 10-1 margin in shots on goal. The Knights took six corner kicks and did not surrender one to the Saints (2-7-0, 0-4-0 MIAC).
In the 20th minute, Pennell notched his team-best seventh goal of the season, scoring soon after a Carleton corner kick led to a frantic scrum in the box. Jones was credited with the assist.
The Knights doubled their lead 10 minutes later.
Dylan Fox-Arnold perfectly delivered a corner kick to the back post, finding
Justin Crawmer, who headed the ball home for his second goal of the season.
Carleton removed any doubt of the outcome with a trio of late-game scores.
Jones contributed his second goal of the season, tucking a 79th-minute shot from the right wing underneath the crossbar.
Owen Flanagan was credited with the assist.
Pennell netted his second goal of the game, sneaking an 86th-minute attempt between the St. Scholastica keeper and the near post. Flanagan picked up another assist.
Jones concluded the scoring and registered his brace with an 89th-minute tally. Pennell credited with the assist.
While St. Scholastica took seven shots, the defense limited the danger, and
Daniel Linder was called upon to make only one save as he registered his sixth complete clean sheet of the campaign.
Carleton has now out-scored the opposition by 40-2 margin this season, easily the largest goal differential in NCAA Men's Soccer (all divisions).
