MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- The No. 13-ranked Carleton College men's soccer squad continued its perfect away record this season after picking up a 2-1 victory over Cornell College.
Ben Pennell and
Owen Flanagan provided the first-half goals for the Knights as they held off a late Ram comeback.
Â
With the win, the Knights (11-1-0) matched the 2008 squad with the program record for most wins in the season's first 12 games. Carleton is 7-0-0 on the road this season.
Â
The Knights came off the bus flying in the first half, outshooting the Rams 16-5 in the period, and registering a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Carleton finally took advantage of this early dominance in the 35th minute.
Dylan Fox-Arnold laid a ball off for Pennell at the top of the box, with the latter working to create an angle before finishing into the upper corner for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Â
Just four minutes later the Knights added to their tally, with a Fox-Arnold corner being headed across the goal by
Justin Crawmer and flicked on by
Sam Isaacman to Flanagan for his third goal of the season. The assists were Isaacman's first assist as a Knight and Crawmer's fifth of the campaign.
Â
The Rams worked their way back into the game, and got a goal back in the 64th minute, but it was not enough as the Knights secured their 11th victory of the season. Carleton's best chances in the second half came as Isaacman rattled a ball of the crossbar in the 78th minute and Flanagan had an 89th minute penalty saved.
Â
Leo Kugel registered five saves for Carleton.
Â
Carleton now has outscored opponents by a 42-3 margin this season, which is the largest goal differential in all three divisions of NCAA Men's Soccer.
