NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's soccer team scored twice in the second half to secure a 2-0 victory over visiting North Central College (IL) at Bell Field. Senior
Cate Patterson scored one goal and assisted another score as the start time was pushed up several hours to avoid afternoon temperatures in the mid 90s..
Patterson now has 16 career assists, tied with Mia Zutz '10 for the highest total in recorded program history. The Knights' co-captain increased her career goal total to 19, putting her in a tie for seventh place in team annals, and her 54 career points are also good for top-five in recorded Knights' history (see charts below).
"A team win today against a very tough and talented side in North Central," said Carleton head coach
Jessica Mueller. "They play an aggressive style and in a formation that doesn't really let anyone settle into a rhythm. Our team kept its composure, battled every step of the way, and we were able to execute our game plan using our depth and taking some risks in our attacking half.
"I'm really proud of this entire team. The effort they've put into our pre-season and into training really showed today."
North Central (1-1-0) out-shot Carleton (2-0-0) by an 13-10 margin, but the Knights put seven of their attempts on frame compared to only two for the Cardinals.
Carleton's best scoring chance of the first half came in the 23rd minute. Patterson dribbled up the left wing and crossed the ball to the middle. The Knights poked the ball over the goal line, but the play was waived off for a foul in the box.
The game-winning tally came in the 57th minute.
Casey MacVeagh collected a throw in at the edge of the box, played the ball to
Anna Borkowski, who immediately sent a service to the far post. Patterson's header glanced off the keeper's hands and the underside of the crossbar before settling into the back of the net.
A dozen minutes later, the Knights doubled their advantage in similar fashion. This time. Patterson played the ball ahead to
Claire Burbery for her cross in from the right side.
Ashlyn Haigh was in position at the top of the six-yard box to head home her second goal in as many games.
Carleton goalkeeper
Ezra Kucur made two saves in recording her second consecutive clean sheet.
