Knights play to scoreless draw with cross-town rivals

NORTHFIELD, MINN. – The Carleton College women's soccer team played cross-town rival St. Olaf College to a scoreless draw at Bell Field.

The Knights (7-1-1, 3-0-1 MIAC) out-shot the Oles (3-3-3, 1-1-2 MIAC) 14-7, bested them 6-3 in the shots on goal, and had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks but were unable to knock the ball past St. Olaf goalkeeper Maddie Black.

While St. Olaf held a slight advantage in time of possession, Carleton had the more dangerous scoring chance throughout the contest.

In the 21st minute, Kathryn Kresse dribbled into the center of the field about 30 yards from goal and whipped a right-footed shot that appeared destined for the top corner. However, Black made a leaping, full-extension save. Just one minute of game time later, Cate Patterson curled a free-kick towards the near post, but Black shuffled over and pushed the shot aside.

St. Olaf had a crack at breaking the deadlock in the 34th minute, as substitute Annika Wallace sent a shot skimming over the turf from just outside the 18-yard box. First-year goalkeeper Avery Trapp, making her second career start, made a diving save and pounced on the rebound.

In the 36th minute, another chance arose for Carleton as a corner kick was knocked around the box and fell Loren Arzayus, who punched the ball on net. The shot deflected off a St. Olaf defender, and Black once again made the save.

Only a minute later, Patterson's long-range attempt glanced off the bottom of the crossbar and Black knocked the ball away before Arzayus could attempt a follow-up.

The Knights started the second half brightly, winning a corner that they played short. Patterson picked out Megan Cablk on the cross, but Cablk turned the free header over the bar. St. Olaf had their only shot on goal of the half in the 63rd minute, as Mia Van der Heide sent a long try towards goal that Trapp held onto.

The best scoring chance of the half came in the 74th minute, as Casey MacVeagh stole the ball about 25 yards from the St. Olaf goal and played through for Kresse, who was 1-on-1 with Black. The St. Olaf keeper registered another sprawling save to keep the contest scoreless.

That was the sixth save for Black on the day, capping a well-earned clean sheet for the St. Olaf senior.
Trapp made three saves in the contest en route to her first career clean sheet, and the fifth clean sheet the Knights have kept on the season.
