NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team started off the 2023 campaign with a bang, notching a 6-1 win over the visiting LumberJacks of Northland College.
Trevor Jones scored a brace and added an assist.
Jonathan Vonderlage and
Ben Pennell both had a goal and two assists with
Briggs Priem and
Barclay Shove tallying the other goals.
The six goals scored by the Knights (1-0) was their most since a 6-0 victory over Lawrence University exactly four years ago.
Carleton attempted 39 shots with 19 of them being on goal, with both figures the most in the respective categories since games against Viterbo on Sept. 15, 2019 and the aforementioned win over Lawrence.
The Knights grabbed the lead in the ninth minute when Carleton forced a turnover, and Vonderlage fed a through ball to Pennell, who calmly took it around the keeper before slotting a shot home.
It took only five minutes for the Knights to find their second goal, as pressure from Vonderlage forced a turnover, took a touch and then fired a 12-yard shot inside the right post.
Carleton extended the margin in the 33rd minute, after Jones notched his first goal of the day with a clever give-and-go with Priem.
The Jacks (0-1) got a goal back in the 41st minute off of a free kick, but the Knights started the second half strong as
Justin Crawmer took the ball down the left side of the field in the 52nd minute before playing a cutback to Jones, who took a touch to steady and blasted the ball past the goalie for his 10th career goal.
The fifth Carleton goal came in the 61st minute as beautiful interplay between Vonderlage, Pennell, and Priem resulted in Priem wide open in front of the Northland goal, finishing past the keeper.
Carleton finished off its scoring less than four minutes later, as a Pennell and Jones conspired to set up Shove, who was left unguarded on the left wing for a low shot inside the far post.
The Knights continue their 2023 season on Sunday, Sept. 3 against Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.
