ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton College men's tennis team lost 5-0 to No. 13-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in the finals of the MIAC Playoffs. These two programs have met in the finals 14 times in the last 16 conference tournaments.
While the Knights (18-4) were swept in doubles this year, all three matches were close.
Tarm Rojanasoonthon (So./Bangkok, Thailand/Chulalongkorn) and
Tate Fuller (So./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) pushed their No. 1 doubles match the distance before falling, 8-7.
Ozzie Viswanathan (Sr./Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and
Zach Leslie (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) came up short, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles, while
Aniketh Vipparla (Jr./Cary, N.C./Green Hope) and
Yuv Kataria (Jr./Kolkata, India/Weil Academy & College Prep) fell at No. 3 doubles by the same score.
The Gusties (24-10) added straight-set victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles to close out the match.
When play was halted, Carleton was up a set in two of the remaining four matches. Rojanasoonthon led 6-4, 2-3 at No. 1 singles, while Kataria owned a 7-5, 3-2 advantage at No. 3 singles.
Leslie sent the opening set at No. 5 singles to a tiebreaker.
This result brings down the curtain on the collegiate careers for the three seniors on the Carleton roster: Viswanathan,
Noah Mueller (Sr./Dubai, UAE/German International School Dubai), and
Will Stepanski (Sr./Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park).
